RETIRED WATERLOO POLICE OFFICERS FORM PAC TO SUPPORT PRO-LAW ENFORCEMENT CANDIDATES

Waterloo, Iowa – A group of retired Waterloo police officers are organizing a political action committee (PAC) to advocate for and against candidates for Waterloo mayor and city council. The group says the current city administration’s recent support for rebranding the longtime griffin patch shows they are deeply out of touch with the majority of their constituents.

Lynn Moller, chair of the Cedar Valley Backs the Blue PAC, says he and other retirees are forming the group to show support for current Waterloo officers. Moller says the city is caving to pressure from a small group of individuals despite overwhelming opposition from citizens and expert analysis showing the griffin has no link to historic racial symbols.

“This expensive and unnecessary attack by the mayor and city council has left many people scratching their heads,” Moller said. “To us, the only thing that needs rebranding is our local government.”

Moller says the Cedar Valley Backs the Blue PAC will work to raise campaign funds to support local candidates that are pro-law enforcement. Mayor Quentin Hart and council members Margaret Klein, Pat Morrissey, and Ray Feuss are up for re-election in November. Retiring Councilwoman Sharon Juon’s at-large seat is also on the ballot.

“Running for office takes money and support,” said Moller. “We hope that our group forming will encourage like-minded people to put their names forward for local office.”

Despite the group being formed by retired police officers, Moller says they hope the community gets involved as well. A bank account will soon be opened at Veridian Credit Union where the public can make donations to the PAC to show their support.

The Cedar Valley Backs the Blue PAC is not affiliated with the Waterloo Police Protective Association (WPPA), the association which represents police officers in the city.
